La Despensa de Maria, Puerto del Rosario | Restaurant in Fuerteventura | Spain
Gastrobars are restaurants between fine casual dining and a place to go for a tapa and a wine. They are very trendy in Spain nowadays.
In one of my food trips to the Canary Islands, I found a well-rated Restaurant in Fuerteventura called “La Despensa de Maria”, also in the Gastrobar category.
Place
It is in the main street of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. Check out this post if you are looking for more foodie things in Fuerteventura.
It has a terrace and a small and cosy dining room. The terrace is covered as it usually gets windy in Fuerteventura.
We booked in advance, but they also accept walk-ins.
Service
We were late for the booking, but the lady whom I believe was Maria herself was super chilled. She said “no worries I will hold your table.
She is super kind and attentive. She was making sure at all times we were enjoying our experience. Recommended us what to eat, presented and explained the courses and asked for immediate feedback. We felt at home. Thanks for that, Maria.
Fuerteventura is known for its gold beaches but La Despensa de Maria is a hidden gem for a Restaurant in Fuerteventura
Food
There is a reasonably sized menu at the restaurant. Without entering entirely in the Casual Fine dining category they have elaborated courses. The food is fresh and the portions are generous. Prices are in line with the same type of restaurants in other parts of the Canary Islands.
Starters
Artisan (homemade) croquettes
They serve six pieces, three of Iberico Ham which were incredibly tasty and 3 of wild mushrooms, also lovely
Creamy Mushroom Croquettes
Crispy prawns
A fusion dish. It is a jumbo shrimp wrapped in in-depth fried rice paper, garnishment are parsley and sweet chilli sauce could taste some soja too. It is a bit spicy. Tasty.
Fried squid
Crispy with not much flour or batter, beautifully served to hang on a cone with refreshing lime mayo. I enjoyed that it was not oily.
Salad of the sea
It is a variation of potato salad with seafood. It was a bit warm because it was just made (she told us beforehand) and it is served with Grissini breadsticks. Creamy and seafood taste.
Main Course
Seabass ceviche with shrimps.
Beautifully served in a silver glitter plate. I missed a bit more of citrus flavour it is more sweet than acid. It came entirely loaded with lobster and fish. On the side, a stripe of sweet potato puree.
Iberian secret with avocado sauce and paprika chips
Secreto is a piece of fatty but amazingly tasty Iberian pork. It served with grains of thick salt, a sort of avocado sauce and homemade sliced paprika chips. Beautiful combination.
Kids Food
Crunchy chicken
Perfectly fried as extremely crunchy
With sliced fried potatoes
Dessert
Chocolate fondant with ice cream and caramel sauce
It was nicely melted in the inside and with a thick toffee cream.
Lemon sphere with apple filling.
It is a semifreddo dessert. It has some baked apple inside as if it was an apfelstrudel. The dessert also has cranberry jam. Nicely shaped in a green semi-sphere
What I liked from ‘La Despensa de Maria | Restaurant in ‘Fuerteventura’
- Food made with love.
- Outstanding service
- Creative desserts
What I think could be better at ‘La Despensa de Maria’
- Drinks: Those tiny coke bottles…
- Cutlery and napkins
- Tea: We order green tea, and it was from Mercadona (a Spanish food chain). We would have loved to have a brew on the same level than the food.
